- More than 40,000 children undergo cancer treatment each year. The average age at diagnosis is 6 years old, while adults’ average age for cancer diagnosis is 66. Childhood cancer is not one disease – there are 16 major types of pediatric cancers and over 100 subtypes. The causes of most childhood cancers are unknown.
- One in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they are 20 years old. Childhood cancer research is vastly and consistently underfunded. Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15 in the U.S.
- It is not just one disease. There are many types, which can be found in different places throughout the body. Childhood cancer (also called pediatric cancer) typically means a cancer that is found in children and teens, and sometimes young adults.
